The EcoNomad™ Concept:

The EcoNomad™ concept began with the goal of providing utility services to off-grid residential, small commercial or institutional buildings, via a container that combines already proven technologies to create a complete micro-infrastructure. Customized ISO shipping containers were designed and fitted with integrated systems for potable water storage and purification, biological wastewater treatment, water and space heating, electrical supply, fire protection, and the capability to remotely monitor and troubleshoot all integrated functions. The EcoNomad™ units were designed to be portable (can be transported by road, rail, water, or air), operate structurally independent of the host building, integrated into new building designs, or retrofitted to support existing structures. EcoNomad™ units were designed for both temporary or permanent online status, reliant upon neither a specific dwelling nor a specific site location. This technology has been designed for extreme winter weather operation, and as such is well suited to applications in circumpolar countries.


The cornerstone of our organization is the EcoNomad™ self contained, transportable, micro-utility technology which was developed in 1999, and has been manufactured since 2000. Our containerized utility appliances provide the convenience of a stand-alone module that can be easily deployed to any installation site, supplying such things as reliable potable water to the users, environmentally friendly wastewater management solutions, integrated energy solutions, and integrated office or workspace solutions. The EcoNomad™ containerized micro-utility appliances can be customized to suit the specific requirements of your site or job, are factory assembled, and delivered in ready-to-operate condition. Our units are designed for continuous 4-season-operation. All components are CSA, ULC, NSF, etc. certified.

Our Potable Water Treatment Systems (PWTS “Blue”) series of containerized potable water treatment systems, combines a NSF 55 (Class A) certified, membrane based water treatment technology compliant with 99.999% contaminant removal, raw (buffer) and treated (surge) storage system, intrinsically safe duplex ultraviolet (UV) disinfection system, UV system fail safe shut off sensors, duplex pumping systems, residual chlorination disinfection systems (optional), and pressurized potable water connection to utility user (optional).

Our Wastewater Treatment Systems (WTS) series of containerized wastewater treatment technology combines our custom designed dual chamber septic tanks (including aeration and fixed film media), disinfection and treatment systems, convenient through-wall connections for dual raw sewage inlets, single outlet and hook-up for external power supply, pumps, and all control and alarms systems securely installed into a singular, insulated unit. The WTS series provide both an aerobic treatment utilizing the proven Waterloo Biofilter® and an anaerobic treatment. No incineration is required, and no chemicals are added. The pre-treated wastewater is dosed over a proven, extremely lightweight treatment medium and the treated effluent is collected for recirculation or for final discharge. Following ultra-violet light treatment and disinfection (depending on the authority having jurisdiction) the effluent is usually discharged directly above ground. Treatment results depend on incoming sewage quality. On average, the treatment should result in the following discharge quality:

  • BOD: below 10 mg/l
  • TSS: below 10 mg/l
  • Coliform: 99% removal of fecal coliform

Our line of ISO 20’ and ISO 40’ (interior height of 96”), customized shipping containers, are perfect for such applications as offices, workshops, and storage units. In addition to the basic micro-utility container conversion, we are able to offer the added convenience of a custom designed and integrated office or workspace. The seamless integration of an office/work space with the convenience of an indoor washroom (and/or compact kitchen, upon request), associated potable water treatment and storage, and wastewater management system, creates a stand-alone module that can be delivered in ready to operate condition.

All units use identical core treatment technology. Our units can be scaled in size or clustered to service your camps population needs. The technology has been developed in a “modular” manner, which allows us to easily tailor to site specific capacity and regulatory requirements, and allows for rapid deployment, installation, and service for your needs. Our systems are designed for continuous operation in remote or harsh locations, housed in heated, robust standard ISO20 or ISO40 shipping containers.

Various add-on products including grease traps, power supply units, or potable water treatment systems enhance the services that we can provide. Our line of Compact Waste Treatment Solutions (CWTS) can be easily integrated into an office, guardhouse, residential, or workshop assembly.

  • To facilitate easy transport by road, rail, water or air to any location in the world, the technology is housed in either an ISO 20 or ISO 40 shipping container. The unit can be insulated for operation in the harshest conditions.
  • The technology is designed as a modular system; equipment and components can easily be exchanged, deleted or upgraded at any time without significantly affecting the overall operation of the core technology.
  • The most innovative feature of the EcoNomad™ technology is the optimization and integration of each component to maximize operational efficiency, minimize interference, and to take advantage of mutually beneficial interactions.
  • To assure the best operation, critical components and equipment are sourced from well known global suppliers, including: General Electric, Isuzu, Honeywell, Kubota, Omron, and Johnson Controls.

Case Study:

Nestor 1 Wildlife Research Camp

The Nestor 1 Wildlife Research Camp is a field research station located in Wapusk National Park; a 33 minute helicopter flight east of the town of Churchill, Manitoba, Canada. The camp is approximately 2 kilometers (1.24 miles) west of the Hudson Bay shoreline. The research facility provides seasonal accommodation for a staff of 8 to 20 people, and is mainly used from May to September.

The EcoNomad™ utility appliance was skidded from Churchill over a frozen tundra trail in the winter of 2008, and commissioned for operation in the summer of 2008.

The utility appliance provides all the infrastructure services for this research station, including:

  • Power generated by renewable energy systems (photovoltaic solar, micro-wind turbine).
  • Back-up power provided by micro cogeneration engine.
  • Potable hot and cold water, filtration and disinfection done on site.
  • Environmentally benign, on-site, wastewater treatment and reclamation.
